Why We Say No to Fast Furnishings and Yes to Planet-Friendly Interiors

Categories: All, Neurodiversity

Because ethical accommodation starts with what you surround yourself with.

The furniture in your accommodation tells a story.

Is it made to last — or made to break after a year?
Is it built from solid, sustainable materials — or covered in plastic veneer?
Was it chosen for comfort, calm, and safety — or because it was cheap and on-trend?

At Diverse Nation, we know that what you sit on, sleep on, and store things in matters — not just for style, but for the environment and your sensory wellbeing.

That’s why we say no to fast furnishings.
No to quick, cheap kits.
No to overdecorated “Insta” rooms that create more stimulation than rest.

Instead, we invest in interiors that are calm, functional, durable, and planet-friendly — and our guests feel the difference.

What is fast furniture — and why is it a problem?

“Fast furniture” is the flatpack equivalent of fast fashion.

It looks good in photos, but:

🛠️ It’s cheaply made and rarely repaired
🪵 Often constructed from MDF and other glue-heavy composites
🛋️ Uses synthetic fabrics with heavy chemical treatments
🗑️ Ends up in landfill after just a few years (if that)

In the UK alone, over 22 million pieces of furniture are thrown away each year.
Most of it from landlords, offices, and… short-term lets.

It’s wasteful. It’s polluting. And it doesn’t serve guests well — especially those with sensory sensitivities or environmental values.

How we design differently

At Diverse Nation, we take a sustainability-through-simplicity approach:

We use fewer furnishings — but better ones
We avoid synthetic textures and plastic-heavy décor
We source items with long-term durability and low environmental impact
We choose calm colour palettes that regulate, not stimulate
We reduce cognitive load by avoiding visual clutter

Everything has a purpose.
Nothing is added “just for the photo.”

And that creates a space that feels clean, honest, and safe — not like you’re sleeping in a showroom.

Why this benefits neurodivergent guests

Neurodivergent guests often have strong preferences or needs around:

🔉 Sound (creaky, unstable furniture is a trigger)
🔆 Visual input (too many patterns = overstimulation)
🧪 Texture and smell (synthetic fabrics or finishes can overwhelm the senses)
💤 Layout and flow (too much furniture = confusing navigation)

By stripping out the unnecessary and focusing on function + feeling, we create a space that:

🧠 Regulates, not overwhelms
🛏️ Invites rest, not vigilance
🧹 Feels easier to manage — especially for people with executive function challenges or OCD

We match our interiors to our ethics

You won’t find flashy gimmicks or cheap decor at our properties.
But you will find:

🪑 Ethically sourced, hard-wearing furnishings
🪵 Natural woods, woven fabrics, soft-toned finishes
🌿 Reused or upcycled items where appropriate
💡 Designs informed by psychology, not Pinterest
📦 Minimal packaging and reduced delivery impact

And behind every choice is a clear, conscious decision:
Does this align with our values and our guests’ needs?

If not, we leave it out.

It goes beyond the furniture

We don’t just stop at the sofa or the bedside table.

Our full interior ethos includes:

Low-toxicity paints and finishes
Cleanable, breathable, and long-lasting materials
Low-maintenance layouts that reduce cleaning stress
Minimalist accessories with a purpose (e.g. sound machines, fidget tools)
Calming design that works for both holiday and business travellers

Whether it’s a family weekend or a blue-collar contract trip, the space works.
Because it’s built for brains, not brochures.

Even our business practices reflect this approach

We don’t do things quickly to chase growth.
We do them right.

That’s why:

🟢 We’re part of the Good Business Charter, as are our partners
🟢 We’re a Disability Confident Employer
🟢 Our website is WCAG compliant and hosted on zero-carbon servers
🟢 We conduct ethical marketing, with no manipulative sales tactics
🟢 Our cleaners are fairly paid and respected as skilled professionals

The values behind our furnishings?
They run through every part of what we do.
