Why We Care About Design So Much — And How Leasing Makes It Possible

Categories: All, Diverse Nation

Neurodivergent-friendly design isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. And it starts with control.

If you’ve ever stayed somewhere that felt off — too bright, too noisy, too cluttered — you’ll understand how the environment you’re in can affect your mental state.

Now imagine that kind of overwhelm is your everyday experience. That’s the reality for many neurodivergent people.

At Diverse Nation, we don’t just acknowledge that reality — we design around it.

But here’s the thing most people miss:

🧠 You can’t create inclusive design if you don’t control the property.

That’s why we lease homes. Not list them. Not manage them on behalf of others.
We lease them directly — so we can redesign them with intention.

Let’s explore why design matters so deeply to us… and why leasing is what makes it all possible.

The truth about most holiday and business accommodation

We’ve done the research — and if you’ve travelled while neurodivergent, you’ve lived it.

Most accommodation:

  • Has harsh, cold-white lighting
  • Is filled with synthetic smells and clashing patterns
  • Uses confusing layouts and poor signage
  • Doesn’t offer quiet zones or low-stimulation alternatives
  • Prioritises aesthetics over comfort and accessibility

These environments aren’t just inconvenient for ND guests — they’re unwelcoming, anxiety-inducing, and in some cases, unusable.

That’s not okay.
And it’s why we’ve built a design philosophy that puts neuroinclusion front and centre.

What neurodivergent-friendly design actually looks like

We work with psychological principles, scientific insight, and lived experience to create:

🧠 Sensory-underloaded environments, including:

  • 🛏️ Muted colour palettes that reduce visual stress
  • 💡 Dimmable, warm lighting that avoids overstimulation
  • 🧼 Fragrance-free cleaning and natural materials
  • 🪟 Soft furnishings that dampen sound
  • 🧭 Intuitive layouts with clear signage to reduce decision fatigue
  • 🧘 Zones for calm and decompression

We also include optional extras like white noise machines, visual schedules, and weighted blankets — based on what helps our guests feel grounded.

This isn’t just “nice to have.” For many ND travellers, it’s the difference between coping and crashing.

Why leasing is the only way to do this right

Design isn’t just cushions and colours — it’s about control.

And when you don’t lease the property, you don’t have control over:

  • What’s on the walls
  • What furniture is used
  • What changes can be made
  • What systems are installed
  • What sensory triggers are removed (or added)

If we were a management company or agent, we’d be constantly asking for permission.
And often, those permissions wouldn’t be granted — or would be reversed without notice.

So we decided:
📌 If we’re going to do inclusion properly, we need to do it fully.

That’s why we lease.

What this means for our landlords

We’ve worked hard to build a leasing model that serves both parties.

When you lease your property to Diverse Nation, you get:

  • Fixed monthly rent
  • A professionally-run company caring for your asset
  • No stress, voids, or tenant management
  • A long-term agreement with no surprises

But you also get something more meaningful:

🏡 The knowledge that your property is enabling accessible travel
🧠 The confidence that it’s being used to improve wellbeing
🫱 The satisfaction of contributing to something positive — without lifting a finger

You don’t have to do the design.
You don’t have to understand neurodivergence.
You just lease — and we handle the rest.

What this means for our guests

Every space a guest walks into has been hand-picked, assessed, adapted, and designed — by us, not by a third party.

That means:

  • They can trust the lighting won’t trigger a migraine
  • They know the layout will be calm and clutter-free
  • They won’t be hit with artificial scents or confusing instructions
  • They’ll feel safe, seen, and welcomed — from booking to check-out

This is especially important for:

  • Autistic travellers
  • People with ADHD
  • Highly sensitive people
  • Families with neurodivergent children
  • People recovering from burnout or trauma
  • Business travellers who need low-stimulation space

This isn’t an aesthetic choice.
It’s about psychological safety.

Design is inclusion. Leasing makes it real.

If we want to deliver accommodation that:

  • Calms instead of overwhelms
  • Welcomes instead of excludes
  • Supports rather than triggers

… then we need the keys in our hands, not just a login to a listings portal.

That’s why our entire model is built on leasing.

It gives us the freedom to design well — and the responsibility to design ethically.

Design isn’t the cherry on top.
It’s the foundation.
And we’ll keep leasing, adapting, and creating — until inclusion is no longer the exception.
